Niko Purred

*** Updated 11/30/2016 *** Niko came to Alley Cat Advocates as a severely ill kitten. We almost lost her. But, after hospitalized and care, she was transported to an Alley Cat Advocates foster volunteer. She was kept warm in an incubator and loved and cared for by her foster mom. Fast forward ... look at her now! She's now taken up part ownership of her foster mom's recliner :) Niko still needs more time to get strong but she has already exceeded all expectations, just by surviving! Thanks to Alley Cat Advocates friends and supporters, [...]

Bernie’s Buddies Celebrates Community Cat Caretaker

April Zirnheld and her family hosted the second annual Bernie's Buddies fundraiser to benefit Alley Cat Advocates on November 12. The event honored Bernard Abell, April's father and a life-long animal lover. Bernie's Buddies donates all proceeds to Alley Cat Advocates. This gift will help Alley Cat Advocates to provide spay or neuter and vaccinations more community cats this year. Mr. Abell was known and loved by our team as a wonderful guardian and advocate for community cats. He is missed and we are so honored to be a part of his beautiful legacy. Special [...]

A Head Bump of Approval

This sweet girl arrived at Alley Cat Advocates with serious injuries, a ruptured and bulging eye, broken jaw, and an injured tongue. She had likely been hit by a car and was found in her neighborhood emaciated, dehydrated and unable to eat. After just a few weeks with the Alley Cat Advocates team, she is healing and feeling like herself again. She made her debut at our monthly meeting and walked down the table introducing herself to each person. When Executive Director, Karen Little, asked us to name her, a volunteer suggested "Flower." As she [...]

Simon

*** Simon Update *** Look at me now! They removed that painful leg that gave me so much trouble. They're calling me "tripod" and I'm getting faster and faster on my three legs. I was boney and my hair looked terrible! Now, I'm looking more handsome every day, filling out a bit and my hair is so smooth and silky. My foster Mom loves me to pieces. She tells me how handsome I am while I snuggle on her lap. Thank you to Alley Cat Advocates volunteers and donors who saved my life. Purrrrrrrr!   [...]

Ziggy and Rosie, Alley Cat Advocates Graduates, 15 Years Later

Charlotte, a community cat caretaker, recently sent us this note. "Only two of our 'Alley Cat' cats are still with us. Ziggy and Rosie were the youngest of the group that was trapped and fixed by Alley Cat Advocates 15 years ago. They are litter-mates, both sweet and gentle. Thank you so much for all you do." We reached out to Charlotte to hear her story. Charlotte remembers a cold night 15 years ago when the first stray cat began to hang around her house. "We noticed stray cats and of course, we fed them. [...]

Catster Magazine features Buddy-Bear and the work of Alley Cat Advocates

Click to Read Pick up a copy of this month's Catster Magazine (formerly Cat Fancy) to see the beautiful face of our Buddy-Bear. Writer Denise LeBeau captured his touching story. Buddy-Bear is a symbol of the changes brought about by our work in the community. "Only a few years ago in our city, a disabled cat like Buddy, one that couldn't walk, would automatically have been put down," said Karen Little, executive director of Alley Cat Advocates. Today, in 2016, that kind of automatic thinking no longer happens. Read Buddy's story below. And, [...]

Miss Agatha

Miss Agatha is like most calicos - beautiful and strong. She looks at people with a certain curiosity and beckons them to pet her with her expressive eyes. However, Agatha's spark was dimmed. She suffered a pelvic fracture and a tail and spinal injury. Most of her tail was gone but an open wound remained. Obviously, she was in tremendous pain. Metro Animal Services reached out to Alley Cat Advocates, and we immediately connected her to our superb community of veterinarians at Jefferson Animal Hospital and Fairleigh Pet Center who were able to provide the [...]

Rosie

The reasons behind Rosie's injury may never be discovered. However, a few things are certain - Rosie has a loving caretaker. Rosie is tenacious. And Rosie will always have a story to meow. Just a few weeks ago, Rosie suffered the worst injury of her nine cat lives. She was shot in the stomach. The perpetrator is unknown. As soon as Rosie's caretaker discovered her injury, she contacted Louisville Metro Animal Services who reached out to Alley Cat Advocates because Rosie's ear tip indicated she was one of our graduates. Immediately, we gave Rosie the [...]

Just like his namesake, Popeye is strong

Popeye when he arrived Popeye made his way to Alley Cat Advocates when his caretaker Charlotte brought him to us to be neutered. She also shared that Popeye had a bigger issue to tackle. "We tried several times to trap him, then he showed up hurt. We knew he was a fighter. That’s how he got his name," she said. He was suffering from a large wound that continued to scab and reopen because of its size and its location on his face. Charlotte said she could see that the wound was infected. [...]

Meet Millie

Millie's thankfulness exudes from her hazel, saucer-sized eyes. She'll walk right up to you, look into your eyes and beckon you to pet her without emitting a single meow. If you happen to miss her signal, don't worry. She'll rub her face and body against your hand until you can't help but show her some affection.  With such a pleasant attitude, you'd never know of Millie's recent troubles. A mere three weeks ago, Metro Animal Services contacted Alley Cat Advocates (ACA) about a cat they had picked up who had an ear tip, which means [...]

Dreamer is not too old or blind to feel love

A few months ago an old, skinny stray cat was brought to Louisville Metro Animal Services. Shelter workers could tell right away the gray cat was dehydrated, quite elderly, and completely blind. In addition, this bony kitty had a respiratory problem and was severely underweight. However, the cat was ear-tipped, which means that he had been neutered at Alley Cat Advocates, probably a long time ago. Workers at LMAS stabilized him with water and food, then contacted Karen Little, executive director at Alley Cat Advocates, and she picked him up. Otherwise, his fate would have [...]

Meet Peter and Wilma Crisler, Cat Superheroes

The little calico mom was starving. As she tried to ween her eight-week old kittens, she grew thinner and thinner. It was October and only getting colder; the three cats may not make it through the winter, but momma cat continued searching for food. She stopped in a backyard, and found some kind souls who fed her. Little did she know, she had landed in the yard of cat superheroes. Wilma and Peter Crisler have always been animal lovers. Because Wilma can never "stand the thought of anything being hungry," she fed this beautiful calico [...]

Volunteer Trappers Needed Immediately

We're looking for a few good men and women who care about helping people and cats! Louisville is lucky to have thousands of residents who care for community cats, keeping them fed and sheltered and getting them neutered. However, some of our elderly and disabled caretakers are not able to trap and transport the cats. This is a critical need in our community. We need enough volunteer trappers to assist our most vulnerable cats and their caretakers. Who can volunteer as a trapper? Must be 18 years old. Have your own transportation. Hours are flexible, [...]

Kitten Season in January?

"About three weeks ago, I started yowling uncontrollably, which never happens in December. Then, I started feeling restless. I couldn't settle down. When Whacky Whiskers started following me around, I knew for sure what was happening ... I was in heat! I thought I had a few months of reprieve: no kittens, no male cats. But of course, this warm winter weather had to trick my body into thinking it was spring again. Now I'm a few weeks pregnant, and I'm worried! I wish I had a little tip of my ear missing like ZadieCat. [...]
