Bernie’s Buddies Celebrates Community Cat Caretaker

April Zirnheld and her family hosted the first annual Bernie's Buddies 5k walk/run through Iroquois park on November 8th. The event honored Bernard Abell, April's father and a life-long animal lover. Bernie's Buddies donated over $1100 in proceeds to Alley Cat Advocates. This gift will help Alley Cat Advocates to provide spay or neuter and vaccinations to 22 more community cats this year. Foster Volunteers Save Lives

This year we've had an unusually high number of cats in foster care ... from litters of kittens to community cats with injuries, infections and parasites. Right now there are 84 cats in the homes of Alley Cat Advocates foster volunteers. Since we began, Alley Cat Advocates has been committed to providing a gold standard of care to our community cats. We do not euthanize cats that have treatable conditions. Healing Takes Time Healing takes time. By providing 2-3 weeks of foster care, a cat can receive the medical treatment and recovery time she or [...]

Lolly Needs Your Help

Lolly Needs Your Help Last Spring Lolly showed up on a country road near a farm. On that very day, a group of loving cat caretakers were putting out traps to take their colony of cats to the Alley Cat Advocates Big Fix. They saw Lolly, a sickly new arrival, and decided to take her along. Their last minute decision saved her life! Lolly was spayed and vaccinated, but her veterinarian also observed a serious ear issue. Lolly has an ear polyp. It is in her ear canal, but growing into other areas of her [...]

Transforming shelters from places where animals go, to places where animals leave!

Matt Bershadker, President of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), released a Position Statement on the responsibilities of effective animal shelters. His article resonated with our team. Since we began in 1999, Alley Cat Advocates has been dedicated to collaboration with Louisville Metro Animal Services and The Kentucky Humane Society. Mr. Bershadker discusses the following themes that ensure the improvement of struggling shelters: Teamwork - When the very best partner with those who are struggling, more lives are saved and struggling shelters improve. Evolution - Shelters must continue to evolve [...]

FIV cats are up for adoption! They need YOU!

Important announcement: All cats are special! But one group of cats here in Metro Louisville is currently extra special...those cats with FIV! For years, a simple blood test labeled cats as FIV. Testing positive meant that these felines suffered immediate death at our local shelter. Now we know that's not necessary - these cats can live long, healthy, normal lives. Louisville Metro Animal Services has begun putting FIV cats up for adoption. We thank you, Louisville Metro Animal Services, for working to save these cats. Now, it is our turn to step up! Now it [...]

Going Beyond Spay and Neuter

Community cats come to us for spay/neuter, but sometimes have other treatable injuries or illnesses. Meet Ella ... Ella came to us with a severe hernia and evidence of a spinal injury. She couldn't move her back legs. We reached out to you, our donors, and you contributed almost enough to fully cover the costs of her veterinary care. Ella is a survivor. Her surgery went well. Her huge hernia was repaired. Her back legs are still paralyzed, but her foster Mom has purchased a kitty cart to help her with mobility. Today, Ella is [...]
